Preventing Tooth Wear and Erosion

At Red Bank Smiles, our experienced dentist and knowledgeable dental team believe that educating patients on how to take care of their teeth is key to helping them attain optimal oral health. Also known as erosion, tooth wear happens when acids eat away the enamel on teeth. If you are concerned about your tooth enamel wearing away, there are steps you can take to prevent or slow the process.

How To Prevent Your Tooth Enamel From Wearing Away

Acidic beverages and foods are a major cause of enamel erosion. Cutting down on drinks and foods such as soda, coffee, wine, tomatoes, citrus fruits and juices can help to prevent tooth wear. When you do eat or drink something acidic, have it with meals and rinse your mouth with water immediately after you’re finished. The following tips from our cosmetic dentist in Red Bank, NJ, can help you prevent your tooth enamel from wearing away:

  • Use a straw when you sip acidic drinks such as soda, fruit juice or iced tea.
  • Drink a glass of milk or eat a piece of cheese after consuming acidic foods.
  • Chewing sugar-free gum can help to lower the amount of acid in your mouth and help you make more saliva, which strengthens and protects your teeth.
  • Drink copious amounts of water throughout the day.
  • If you have dry mouth, use mouthwashes and other products that are specially made to keep your mouth moist. Chewing sugar-free gum also helps.
  • After you’ve consumed acidic foods or drinks, wait at least an hour to brush. These types of foods soften enamel and make it more prone to damage while brushing.
  • Always use a soft toothbrush and brush gently to avoid scratching tooth enamel.
  • Use ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. Ask your dentist for recommendations if you have any conditions such as tooth sensitivity or gum disease.
  • Seek treatment for conditions such as bulimia, acid reflux, alcoholism or tobacco use.
