Cavity Fillings: What to Expect

A filling is used to repair tooth decay. When plaque erodes the enamel and creates a cavity, it’s important to fill it so that it doesn’t get worse. At Red Bank Smiles, we offer several different types of fillings to help treat every patient’s needs. If you have a cavity or suspect you might, schedule an appointment and we’ll find a treatment that works best for you.

How Cavity Fillings Work

Before a cavity is filled, we have to prepare the tooth first. We need to get rid of any decay and remove any weakened parts of the tooth structure. Then, together we’ll decide which type of cavity filling will be the best option.

The two types are:

  • Composite filling (white) – blends in with the rest of the tooth for a natural appearance
  • Metal, or amalgam, filling (silver) – offers long-lasting protection

Sometimes, the hole will be too large for a filling. In that case, we may recommend

an inlay or an onlay. An inlay is fitted to the size of the cavity and secured in place. An onlay, on the other hand, covers part of the tooth.

In situations where the hole is still too large, the next option will be a crown. A crown acts like a cap that goes over the tooth and comes in a few different materials and styles.

How to Take Care of a Cavity Filling

Right after getting a cavity filling, make sure to follow any instructions given to you. You may have to wait before eating, drinking or brushing. The tooth may also be sensitive to hot or cold foods. They can even damage the filling if consumed during the first couple of hours.

To help your filling last a long time, you’ll want to take good care of your teeth. Brush at least twice a day and floss every day. It also helps to avoid sugary, chewy, acidic and hard foods as much as you can. But the reality is that most fillings don’t last forever. You’ll probably have to get a new cavity filling at some point in the future.
